Iditarod- Homework

As you know, the Iditarod started yesterday in Alaska. Remember you can check your musher's standings here: http://iditarod.com/race/2013/standings/ and learn more about the Iditarod here: http://iditarod.com/.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) thinks the Iditarod is cruel punishment for the dogs, however many people think that the Iditarod is a dream come true for dogs. Which side do you agree with and WHY?

*Bonus question: Would you want to participate in the Iditarod? Why or why not?

My opinion of Iditarod is not oh its that, cause there are different reasons of what I like and don't. First it depends on how the owner treats the dog and, what the the dog likes to do. Second think that if they didn't do it competitively then it would be better, but checking what I've said lots of times the people don't treat each other or dogs nicely and they do it competitively. I think if I had an opinion it would be that I don't think its good. Also I don't exactly think a dogs dream is to do this.

I honestly think the Iditarod should not be happening because it is too dangerous for dogs and for people. I t would definately be scary to participate. Dogs can get hurt or get killed just by the cold weather or moose. I think they should make it shorter or no race at all. I think they should not put the race through somewhere where there is moose.

I think it's good for the dogs because they get lots of exercise. they don't want to be locked in a cage.

I think yes because they get lots of exercise. Also when the dog are running they feel free a little. They also don't want to be locked in a cage. When they are in the cage i bet they don't have any room. I think they like traveling to other places oh by the way i was talking about the
dogs

The iditorod race is good and bad for dogs one it is bad for dogs because everything like the cliffs and holes and then I guess they die and go up there to heaven. The iditorod race is good for the mushers and the dogs because the dogs get more room to run and it's good for the mushers because they get more space instead of staying inside watching television and for once the mushers get to be famous and the dogs also get famous so the iditarod race is in the middle of good and bad.

Well I am on both sides they both have great reasons. I want dogs to be in a Iditarod because its good exercise for them. Last time I checked no dog on earth likes to be locked up in cage. Thats what makes them feel free. Many dogs love to go on walks and especially run. Bad part is that they might be seriously hurt and the mushers keep making the run it and then go to the last slop to get it fixed. And the mousse runs the poor little huskies. And it is a danger for humans too. If you're tired you can fall asleep and then let go to the sled and fall off and have serious injury and might die if no one fids you.

I think dogs should be allowed to race because it gives the dog exercise.
It is also good because they get to be outside and work with the musher.
Some mushers care about there dog more than they care about themselves.
Siberian huskies are designed to live in extreme condition, and it doesn't hurt them.
Some dogs get injured but most dogs are well taken care of.

I think the Iditarod is good for the dogs. First, by running the dogs get good exercise for the dogs. Second it's good for the dogs to get out side cause some dogs do not get outside enough. Third, they get rest breaks and just as much food water and love as the dogs get at home. That is why I think the Iditarod is good for the dogs.

I agree that the Iditarod is good for dogs. Dogs need their exercise. Also they might have different rivals that they want to compete against. I wouldn't want to participate in the Iditarod because I have no dogs that can survive Alaska.

I personaly think that the Iditarod is good for dogs. It can let dogs get exercise. It also can let dogs let off body heat. Dogs shouldn't be locked up at home all day they should run. That's why dogs should do the Iditarod. I would not do the Iditarod beacause I would cry if I didn't get anough sleep.

I think its great for the dogs, because they get all the exercise they need and more. They basically get pampered and get to wear little booties that are their shoes so their little feet don't freeze. Plus they are specially bred to want to race .

I think no because dogs can die of that and i have seen that and its not nice and they are corld and scaid to go out in the wilded and die and thats why i think i is so not coooool for dogs to go out they and die.

I do not agree with PETA because the dogs are a species of canine and love to run. I think it is cruel to keep dogs pinned up in a crate all day because dogs love to play out side. I would want to participate in the Iditarod because I love snow and dogs. I think dogs if the are not treated well should not run if owner does not take care of them well before the race.

I am an animal lover so i think it really helps the dogs but I also think it is quite dangerous for the dog like how some dogs get trampled by moose and can go into holes in the ice and either freeze to death in the water or drown and I think it is horrible when they die but other wise i think it is great. No I don't think I would do the race because it would be TOO COLD !

I believe the Iditarod is a great race for dogs, and not inhumane to them. These dogs are bred for this purpose--to run and withstand the elements. The mushers and dogs must love the adventure of the race, and that's why they do it. I would not like to participate in the Iditarod. It's way too cold and dangerous.

I think that the people who agree with the Iditarod are correct because the dogs like to have a lot of space to run and be free. The dogs should like to get exercise more. At Peta they just keep them in cages and don't let them run around. Although the dogs get exercise at the Iditarod they could still get sick or die.

i think it is good for them because they get lots of exerzize. they get all the sleep they need. they have all the food they need.they have a lot ofv rest. if they have spare time they might play.

I think that it is okay for the dogs to race because they are very tough, they have thick fur and are built for running. I also think that the dogs should get to race because they get great exercise. I think that the dogs have fun running the race. The dogs also get food, water and rest. I wouldn’t participate in the Iditarod because the temperature can get to -40 degrees or more.

I think that dogs should and should not run in the race. If they run in the race they will get a lot of exercise. The bad part is that they could get trampled by mostly moose and a lot of other wild animals. The PETA has a good reason too. They are worried about the dogs. That is why they want to keep them safe. Now that’s the good part. The bad part is that the poor dogs don’t get the exercise they need. They are locked in a cage. Nobody would want to be locked in a cage even if it has food and water. I think that the dogs should have a good run and be healthy and tooken care of two. The PETA and the Iditarod together. The dogs would love that. The PETA should not lock the dogs in cages. That’s the only concern.

I think it is not bad for dogs to run the Iditarod. Running is good for us so it must be good for dogs. This type of dogs is meant to be outside and not inside because of their fur. They are not cold in the snow. I would not want to do the Iditarod because I prefer hot temperatures and it must be very difficult to memorize the path. I would be scared to get lost in Alaska.
