Scientific Testing- Homework

In class today, we disucssed how scientists sent Laika, a stray dog, into space to test the effects it would have on her and to see what improvements needed to be made before we could send humans into space. Scientists often test things on animals to make sure they are safe for humans. Do you think it is right to test things that might hurt people using animals?

Please write at least five sentences with reasons and any evidence you can think of to support your answer.

There are pros & cons, the pros are...
If she did not get picked she would be bored for the rest of her life. She probably would like something exiting to happen in her life. Last, i think that she would prefer to be a famous then to be a stray.
The cons are ...
I think its mean that they put an animal into space, it would be easier to send a human. If they knew she was going to die why did they send her into space?

Yes because Laika was a stray dog and it wasn't like she had a family. Also, they needed to test a mammal because humans are mammals and they knew that Laika wouldn't come back. But they weren't expecting anything else so they needed to test for that. That's why they sent her out in space and it was fair that they sent her out into space.

I think it was cruel to kill the dog but if we did'nt then we would'nt know what to prepare for when we are in space and we would die.

I think animals should be allowed to go into space. It's kind of like a model. They're almost the same to us if there mammal. So they didn't want to use humans because that probably meant that the human would have a family, and if the human died, then the family would be REALLY depressed. And they might go crazy. So I say animals can be tested to go to go to space, but not any wild experiments.

I think it`s sometimes okay for animals to test products. When a dog is tested or even a monkey it`s cruel, but if we use rodents such as rats and mice there going to be exterminated anyways. Rodents are not house pets and are scavengers so are bound to die in an execution with traps or tools. Forceful chemicals are not the best things to test. Scientis should use dummies with artificial parts such as har and limbs. Mammals are incompetent creatures that aren`t built to withstand such tests, we ourselves are mammals and are risking the lives of other mammals like cats, dogs, monkeys, mice, and eachother. We can always make a difference in our lives so why don`t we.

Isobel, they sent Laika into space because they wanted to see what was wrong with the spaceship even though her death was expected.

I think we should not test things on animals because it will hurt the animals. It is not fair to the animals that would suffer. Animals are just as important as people. We need other ways to test things. It is are responsibility to take good care of the animals.

Yes, I think it is okay to test things on animals before humans because it wouldn't be right to risk a human life. I also think it is okay because you don't know what will affect the human body. I would rather have an animal die than a family member. We also cannot be cruel to the animals we are testing. Animal testing has helped many people and has saved lives.

I think it wss okay to send Laika, a stray dog into space for testing. One reason I think it was okay to send Laika is that if they send humans, humans would die. Also it was fine to send Laika into space because she lived alone and had no family as she was a street dog.The astronauts used her as a model to find out if it was wise to send humans to space.Laika was the right choice as she was a mammal too.Laika became famous after being sent to space. Now do you think it was okay to send Laika into space?

I don't think that it is a good idea to test things that might hurt people using animals. The reason why I think It is a bad idea is because animals have feelings. I think that sending animals into space can hurt the animal population around the world. The scientist should make a monitor the records sound and film.

Shriya said...

Yes.Because the people need some evidence like what to wear, what food to bring and what kind of machines. Also they sent dogs and monkeyes because humans, dogs and monkeyes are mammals.

Somtimes it will be wrong because intentionally you can't hurt a living animal right out of it's habitat when you know if it is going to die or not.

I say its OK. Its Ok because their just trying to test if its safe for a human to go to space, the only thing I dont like is that they sent a DOG into space. I think it would be even better if they sent an animal that nobody would really care for. The animal that I would send into space is probably a snail or a squirrel.

Duncan E said...

Bryan, I have to comment on yours, I think we sometimes have to use animals, because they are like a model to us. Just to tell you, lots of humans have died for testing flight.

Duncan E =D said...

Tjaden, I'm kinda with you, but we are testing what would happen to us, so our test run would have to be an animal to not harm the human race. I not with you on that one.

I think it is okay for people to use animals for testing if they do it for a good purpose. Example: Scientists used Laika to see if people could survive in space. That was a good purpose because they could have sent a person into space and killed the person. Instead, they just killed a dog. When Laika died in space, it was very sad but if a person died, it would be even worse. I don't think that people can just go and test on animals if it's not going to be helpful to the world in any way though. People should be responsible and think about what they are doing before they go and test on animals. If someone has a good purpose to test on animals, they should at least test on pesky, harmful rodents like rats.

Jakob M said...

Yes,because it will save a humans life. And so they can find out more about space.

I think (in Laika's case) That it's okay. She was a stray, it's not like she had a family. She is probobly in less misary dead. Why did they have Laika in space for so long? I argee that humans are no more important than other animals. Though, if we only tested on humans, animals would be more important.

Andrew, gibels, hamsters, and guiny pigs are all comen pets.

It was exciting for Laika(probobly)and it would be boring to stay a stray. Yes, I think it is okay to test on animals because if we test on humans we would eventually be extinct.

Yes, I think they should send animals frist before they send humans. But if people know the animal is going to die, why test it? When the test is finnished the animal deserves to be rewarded for its contribution in science. Then give the dog a big treat!! That is why I think it is OK to test animals before humans.

I agree they should have sent Laika because if they had sent a human his/her family would have been very depressed. Laika didn't even have a family so she had nothing to look foreward to in the rest of her life. She was a stray and she would have died sooner than a healthy human. If you ask me, I would much rather die in space in the first rocket ship than get run over by a car and no one even know who I am. I think it's OK to test on animals as long as you're 100% sure you can't use a crash test dummy.

I think it was ok to send Laika into space for science. She had no family and this made her famous, and it was a great adventure for her. But it is cruel at the same time. I wonder if we should send deathly ill people into space, if it is ok with their family. It would be just like donating organs to save other people's lives or to use in science. The best would be not to have to kill any living thing, and to use what we have on earth without hurting it.

I think that it is okay to test things on animals although we should test some things on humans to. Also I think that sending Laika into space was a good choice because she didn't have a family or anything, but it was also kind of mean because they already knew that she was going to die, so basically they were just killing her. But humans are more important then animals so if someone tested something on an animal, their 'family' won't be very sad if the animal died but a humans family would be really sad and probably mad at the company. I also agree with Nicole that when the animal is done testing something, they should be awarded with a treat. That is why I think.

I think that sometimes it would be okay like in this situation. There is a life threatening disease and they think they have found a cure. So they take a mammal with the same disease and test it out them and if it works, millions of lives could be saved. But here is a situation where it's not okay. The army has just made a gun that's so powerful that they just had to try it out.So they test it out on a dog. That would be cruel and killing something that is absolutely harmless.

I think the scientist made the right decision on sending Laika into space. But still the sientist should be testing animals or rodents that we hate like rats for instence we dont like them. Im a dog lover so i seriously dont want to send them into space. They dont know that other living things could have feelings to like when Laika could have felt sad when she died. Why would the scientist send her into space when they knew she was going to die?

Allie said...

I think that it's a good idea so that we can protect human lives. But, I don't like the idea that harm might come to any animals. Since I wasn't in class on Monday when this was talked about I'm not sure what the scientists found out. I wonder if the dog liked going up in space. I think the astronauts probably did what they could to keep the dog safe and happy.

i think it was not okay to kill the dog but they did it for a great resson at some point she was going to die but if they needed to know something and their mammals just like us but what i dont under stand is that humans are mammals too so it wouldent make a differance.

Adam H said...

I think it was okay to send laika because she did'ent know she was going to die, like if we had sent a human they would probly start feaking out because they would know they were going to die and thats not exatly somthing to be happy about.also she was a stray and was probly going to die any ways but at least she died knowing she was the first dog in space.third is that dogs are very much like humans and she was a great test subject.forth is that eventhogh many other dogs were training she got to be first and I would be pretty happy if I did not know I was going to die.we should be very proud of ourself and laika!

Isobel, what would YOU do if you were a human? Well I would not care because you're sending an animal into space. It wouldn't be easier if there was a human. I think we should use animals.

RILEY IS AWESOME =D said...

No,I don't think it's right because
if we were animals we probably would not do it to a much more advanced race like humans. We think animals are of no use for us but if they weren't there we would not be alive.WE treat animals almost as slaves,we use them to test stuff that could be(and sometimes is)fatal. Besides, animals don't do some of the bad stuff we do.Another reason is because animals usualy do not do stuff to humans. That's why I don't think it's right.
